TORONTO, Aug. 30 - (Re-publish from CNW press release from August 19th. 2010) Fisher-Price is celebrating laughter, ingenuity and a fresh new look with a series of programs that encourage Canadian babies to play, laugh and grow. Over the next few months, Fisher-Price will launch its 'Best Little Laugh' contest as well as its new look and feel. Also, Ontarians are invited to check out the newest Fisher-Price toys at the Playtime Tour 2010, visiting key locations across the province.

The Fisher-Price 'Best Little Laugh' Contest

The best way to a mother's heart is through her child's laughter, says a recent survey conducted by Angus Reid. In fact, when moms were asked "what is the best sound that their child makes throughout the day," 71 per cent said laughter. Therefore, Fisher-Price is evoking children's laughter over the next few months through the 'Best Little Laugh' contest. The contest invites parents and legal guardians across Canada to upload a sound clip or video of their child's laughter to bestlittlelaugh.ca. From there, parents and legal guardians can send the link to friends and family through Facebook and Twitter to encourage votes for their child's laughter. The grand prize winner will take home the ultimate Fisher-Price toy closet, which includes $2,500 worth of Fisher-Price toys, a year's worth of Fisher-Price diapers and a Kodak Playsport Digital Video Camera. Additionally, there are 50 secondary prizes.

"For over 80 years, Fisher-Price has been all about bringing joy to young children and parents through the power of play. A child's laughter is an indication of health, proper development and happiness - all things that play enhances," said Donna Polimac, mother of two young children and Senior Manager - Marketing for Fisher-Price. "We encourage all Canadians to enter the 'Best Little Laugh' contest and invite Ontarians to join us for the Fisher-Price Playtime Tour 2010 to test out the newest and hottest line-up of Fisher-Price toys."

To deliver the Fisher-Price 'Best Little Laugh' Markham based agency Brandfire chose Filemobile's user generated content contest to provide the platform for this program.

Score A Hockey Musical

Toronto, Ontario - Yes you read that correctly: Score - A Hockey Musical is coming to theaters October 22nd. This never before tried concept of matching hockey with singing has been chosen as the opening film at the Toronto Film Festival ( September of 2010 ). The movie stars Olivia Newton John is a love story about a pick-up league hockey player who makes it big. Here is an expert about the film from the Globe and Mail:

Brief clips of the film shown Wednesday featured Score’s lead, played by actor Noah Reid, singing in one scene about his friendship with a girl next door and trying to convince his protective parents that another game of shinny won’t undermine his studies. In another scene, he questions hockey violence as a full-blown, on-ice brawl turns into choreographed half-fighting, half-dancing, with one character commenting that hockey without fighting would be like Kraft Dinner without the cheese. Pasta, yes, but not satisfying to the palette.

The musical has 19 original songs with lyrics by McGowan and music by an assortment of artists, including the Barenaked Ladies, Amy Sky, Newton-John, Workman and singer-songwriter Marc Jordan (who also stars in the film).

Filemobile is working with 70mainstreet and Mongrel Media to produce a social media platform for fans of the movie. The first phase is now live, and more is to come in September. Watch for it, and check out the trailer.

UFCW Canada Broadcasts from G20 with User Generated Content News

Toronto, Ontario – The union UFCW Canada (www.ufcw.ca) organized a groundbreaking effort at Toronto's G20 summit in June. With the help of Toronto based Digital Agency Global Mind 360 (www.globalmind360.com), a website was created to communicate the UFCW Canada's involvement in the G20 and also to provide a voice for the people and their many activities. The website consisted of video news dispatches about the union's and communities’ daily efforts and initiatives as well as a contest.

As part of the GEE20.ca launch Jack Layton (NDP) amongst other leaders participated in UFCW Canada's interviews, providing their insight into the G20 summit. One of the most interesting results was the live webcasting of two forums, entitled Globalization Greed: the Walmart Case and No Rights, No Rules forum about temporary migrant workers. This project has been a major breakthrough in the way Canadian unions reach out to the people.

The GEE20.ca (www.gee20.ca) website was powered in part by Filemobile's video player widgets and its UGC Contest application. Global Mind 360 pulled it all together and provided a strong user experience for the public, UFCW members and staff who produced the content.

Source: Mediacaster Magazine, May 22nd, 2010 (Better late than never)

Having gathered more than 1,200 user-generated videos, uploaded by funny people across Canada, you'd think there'd be a TV show in there somewhere.

At least, The Comedy Network thinks so - it is bringing submissions from its user-generated website to primetime television, in a new show called Upload Yours.

Also premiering Thursday, June 3 on the specialty TV channel is Tosh 3.0, another light-hearted look at the Internet. The two shows about the Web can also be caught on the Web on-demand, at thecomedynetwork.ca.

Daniel Tosh returns with 16 new episodes of TOSH.0, the weekly, topical hit series that exposes and skewers the endless array of ridiculousness on the Internet. In the premiere episode, the fan-favourite "Web Redemption" segment features the Lightning Bolt Larper (aka Brendon Boucher). Boucher, famous for casting his lightning bolt spell on the Internet, is brought to Los Angeles to recreate his famous larping video on Tosh.0, accentuated with special effects.

Following TOSH.0, The Comedy Network's new original series, Upload Yours is said to shine a spotlight on videos uploaded to The Comedy Network's user-generated comedy site uly.thecomedynetwork.ca Comedy Network says it has pulled the most "unique" of these videos and thrust them into the broadcast spotlight for the entire country to laugh at, or share-an-awkwardly-long-uncomfortable-silence-with-friends-or-family-members-before-being-excused-to-go-to-the-bathroom-moment.

The Comedy Network says it will help kick start these digital programs with a live event celebrating online comedy (both intentional and unintentional) at a downtown Toronto club on June 1st.

No word as yet if attendees will be videotaped for subsequent uploading.

The Upload Yours Comedy Community is powered by Filemobile's Media Factory API's.

Media Factory Product Update

We'd like to share some of our recent product enhancements, some of which you may already be using and some that you may not have noticed:

Main Navigation Re-org

As we continue to add functionality to Media Factory, we are always challenged with where to put things. With this release, we have consolidated a number of settings and configurations into an aptly named "Settings" main nav tab. If you have the appropriate permissions, you will see it at the top right.

In order to make room for the Settings tab, we have renamed MEDIA MANAGER to simply MEDIA.

Comments and Members

We've made a number of improvements to the Community > Comments section of Media Factory.

Moderators now have the ability to edit the comment in place instead of having to visit another page. Also, the commenter is now properly displayed regardless of whether they are a registered user or an anonymous user.

You'll also find the member detail page is more focused on user uploads and comments, with quick links to view, edit and moderate their media.

Translator

It's now much more efficient to have applications in multiple languages. Previously, if you wanted your Media Factory application to be in English and French, you would need to install and maintain two separate applications. With the Translator, all the language information is kept separate from the actual page code. The key benefit is that bug fixes are applied across all versions of the site and changing copy (frequently requested by non-developers) does not require editing HTML.

Check out the video below for a demo of Translator.

External Storage

Filemobile takes your data security and privacy seriously. Our unique platform enables us to provide media management and interactive applications as software-as-a-service, yet allows you to store your media on your infrastructure. This feature is easy to configure and is described in detail in the Media Factory developer docs.

External storage can be configured to send files to your own servers or an Amazon S3 instance. For added security in transit, files can be transferred via SFTP. And as always, we are CDN agnostic and your storage system can act as an origin for all major delivery networks.

The Best Transcoder Gets Better

Here is a quick list of recent improvements on the transcoder:

New build improves transcode time by up to 310%

Custom thumbnails allow you to pick time in video to grab image

Increased default quality for Quicktime

Two-pass encode enabled for H.264 custom profiles

Fixed bug in Ogg Theora - encode video for all HTML5 sites

Cloud-based Redundancy

This week we announced the introduction of a secondary instance of Media Factory, and all the hosted apps contained within. In the event of service degradation at our primary datacenter, the entire system automatically fails over to our cloud-based version on Amazon EC2.

At the moment, the backup instance of Media Factory will be static, meaning no data can be written to the database. The effect of this is that while visitors will be able to browse and view content on your site, they will not be able to upload, comment or rate.

This is the third and certainly largest portion of our system to use Amazon EC2. All of our webcam recorders, and our streaming video services also run on the same virtual infrastructure.

It is our intention to keep using cloud computer services to scale our system. Eventually, the backup Media Factory will be fully functional, allowing us to make it our primary instance along with the transcoder network.

We need your feedback

Our developer network maintains an active forum at http://forums.filemobile.com. We encourage you to browse some of the topics and see some of the challenges and solutions encountered while using Media Factory. There are also sections for product release notes, operational announcements, and feature requests!

Thanks!

Social Media for Business

May 27, 2010 – Toronto, ON | We hear a lot about social media every day in blog posts, Twitter, traditional media and the like. It’s “the” method of communication for many people, surpassing speaking on the phone, even if it’s mobile. It has become an accepted, effective and growing method of marketing and interacting with customers. So what about within your business?

Historically, technology was developed in the business world, government or academia first, and then later adapted for consumer opportunities. Examples include the desktop computer, email and the Internet itself. Today, what we’re often seeing is the opposite, with consumer products later finding business application, such as desktop search, podcasts, broadband video and mobile applications.

It’s also normal to see consumer software used by employees in the workplace before being formally adopted by IT departments. Want your people to be more productive and lower IT costs at the same time? Find out what your employees like to use and involve them in determining what tools the business can benefit from. Like it or not, changes are occurring in how people think, learn, process information, communicate and collaborate.

Social media is now becoming more widely accepted within businesses to enable people to communicate, collaborate and share knowledge in a more productive manner. LinkedIn and Twitter are two public sites that can be used effectively for specific business purposes such as recruitment or customer support. While management often debates the pros and cons of allowing employees access to popular, public social networks such as Facebook, YouTube and MySpace, they are starting to see the value of these types of tools and functionality within the organization. You can now have functionality similar to the public social networks inside your organization – to share information in a safe and controlled environment, without the worry of exposing sensitive corporate information to others outside the company.

A few factors contribute to the value social media can play for business. Humans are social and visual creatures by nature. There is a strong move online toward images and video, for management communications, product information, presentations, blog posts and training (see Video Opportunities article for more examples). We are continuing to see communication go towards shorter, searchable and contextual “sound bites”.

Social media can aid in one other business challenge. The loss of corporate knowledge is a growing issue, with an aging population and significant numbers close to retirement, regular employee turnover and the high cost of training new people. When people leave your business, they walk out the door with some of your most valuable assets: applied knowledge and experience. Making it easier for people to share knowledge in a safe and controlled manner and wrapping social activities such as commenting, rating and tagging around online information and dialogues, helps draw out this experience and convert it from individual to organizational value. Capturing just a small percentage of this day-to-day experience and making it searchable within your organization unlocks a knowledge base that was previously inaccessible.

Your younger employees expect to have tools in the workplace that they already use daily. Providing similar, easy-to-use tools within the organization helps break down the traditional cultural resistance to knowledge sharing that many businesses struggle with.

“Social business” opportunities to share what’s important and interesting include:

management communications;

a central place to aggregate, manage, access and repurpose all presentations;

innovation tools;

competitor information;

profiles with documents authored, recent work experience, speaking engagements, areas of interest and blogs; and

online, just-in-time and distance training.

Through the use of video and interactive applications, you help attract, engage, interact and retain your people. You also reduce the time of onboarding, making employees more valuable, more quickly.

Additional benefits of making your business social are:

unleashing creativity and innovation;

reducing time to market;

increasing productivity through quicker access to knowledge;

increasing revenue by delivering broader value to more customers;

significantly reducing email messages; and

improving overall employee engagement.

By building true organizational knowledge, these tools help strengthen brand and corporate loyalty within an organization, thereby increasing external brand value.

Filemobile enables Social Media apps for the 2010 Mesh Conference

Thursday, May 20th - Toronto - Filemobile was happy to provide a number of different technologies to the recent Mesh Conference. The Mesh Conference is dedicating to bringing leaders together from media, society, business and marketing. Now in it's fifth year Mesh Conference had over 500 attendees who watched over thirty sessions from a variety of fields.

Filemobile provided a video hub that showcases all of the Mesh video from the last two years.
The video hub lets users watch previous sessions, and users can comment, rate and vote on the content that they see. The entire community is Facebook Connected.

New in 2010 was Mesh Live which was promoted during Mesh and asked the conference participants to upload photos and videos of their Mesh experience. Over 100 pieces of content were submitted during the conference, and they provide a behind the scenes look at the Mesh Conference experience.

Filemobile partnered with Mobile Application provider Spreed Mobile who built an Iphone application. The Iphone application let the audience watch all the videos on the Mesh Conference hub, and upload photos and videos from their iphone.

Lastly, Filemobile provided a dynamic slideshow that showed in real-time the photo and video uploads from the Mesh Community.

Attending the conference was Dave Carroll from United Breaks Guitar fame.
He explained to the audience how his meteoric rise to fame came to be.
Check out him playing the now famous United Breaks Guitar song.

May 2nd 2010, Toronto - Today Kraft launched the Kraft Celebration Tour. Kraft and TSN's Sportscentre have teamed up to give away a 10 x $25,000 Community face lifts. Yes you read that correctly they are giving away $250,000 to spruce up 10 community centers across Canada.
Last year this program had hundreds of communities participate and over a million votes were cast. Like last year the winner will have a TSN Sportscenter broadcast from their community.

Filemobile was chosen by Kraft and TSN to deploy and host the contest for the second year in a row. We are doing this with our media community application. One new feature added to this years contest is a Facebook Connected experience. This allows the audience an easy one click login/register process. It allows site users the ability to broadcast their site activities to their friends, offering the program a built-in viral marketing platform.

Add your community center to the program for a chance to have a $25,000 refresh.

Filemobile's Video SEO Helps Content Jump to the Top of Google Search Results

Check out this case study:

Video SEO is a big buzz this year across the web. Why? Well Google and Bing are starting to index video on their homepages. Big deal you say? Well when you consider that video represents a tiny fraction of the content that the big search engines crawl then you see that you are competing in a much smaller pool to get high rankings on Google and Bing.

Steve Hulford shot a video of CP24 Vice President and General Manager Bob McLaughlin, where the two talked about user generated content and TV. The video was shot and posted to this blog. All of the video on the Filemobile blog are located in this sitemap XML file.

Next step is to setup a webmaster account at Bing and Google. These two services allow you to add a sitemap, and an video sitemap. The site map in this case for Filemobile is located here: www.filemobile.com/sitemap.xml and the video site map is located here: www.filemobile.com/sitemap.xml?=video. Now each time you post an article on your site, or a video, these two feeds will notify Bing and Google, thus allowing people the ability to find your content in their web searches. It is important to note that these services don't replace your current SEO practices, they are enhance what you are already doing.

Now lets look at the results. Within three weeks of adding the feed to Google, this video ranks 10th when searching for "user generated content" in Google Video. When searching for "User Generated TV" it ranks third. When searching "user generated content" in Google search, our video is now 2 clicks away. Over 50% of the traffic to the video has come from searches, while the other 50% has come through our blog and social media marketing pursuits.

Site maps are both services available to all of Filemobile's white label clients. If you are an API client consider creating your own sitemap. To find out more about how you can make use of this give us a call.

<!--

Update: As of May 4th, 2010 - I just did a Google Search for "Video SEO" which is a keyword that I am following. I like it as it is the highest ranking search term in the video seo category. It has on average 27,100 searches a month. If you type in "video SEO" this blog post is now 8th on Google's 1st page of results. I think I am going to do a video next. That would potentially put me in 4th spot :-).

Friday, April 23rd, 2010 - Toronto - The Hockey News launched today a Firefox Plugin that allows their audience to experience Hockey News content in a highly immersive way. The Hockey News partnered with Brand Thunder who provided the custom branded browser theme.

The goal of this project is to increase and engage the hardcore hockey fan on The Hockey News. Brand Thunder has a case study that shows it can increase your traffic by 8x.

Filemobile's role in the project was to provide The Hockey News and Brand Thunder with a sitemap feed that makes it easy to integrate The Hockey News video (which Filemobile also provides) and meta data into the Browser Plugin.
